Maintaining Your Permanent Resident Status
The 730-Day Residency Requirement
To retain Permanent Resident status, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within every rolling 5-year window.
Renewal Process & Travel Documents
- Renewal Window: Apply for a new PR card when your current card has less than 9 months of validity remaining.
- Traveling Abroad: An unexpired PR card is required for commercial travel. If abroad with an expired card, apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).
